Background and Objectives: In recent years, technology has emerged as a fundamental pillar of all human activities, influencing every aspect of life. Consequently, individuals’ living environments are increasingly filled with technologies designed to enhance comfort and well-being. Equipping urban spaces with smart technologies represents a growing trend that progresses in parallel with other environmental transformations. One of the key prerequisites for this process is an innovative environment that enables the realization of technological ideas. Given the significance of this domain, the present study aims to analyze previous research addressing the relationship between urban innovation ecosystems and urban technologies.
Materials and Methods: This research adopts a bibliometric approach to map the scientific landscape on urban innovation ecosystems and their connection with urban technologies. To this end, publication trends from 2010 to 2025 were examined. Data were collected from the Scopus database after applying specific filters and analyzed using VOSviewer software through various dimensions, including co-occurrence, co-authorship, and citation
Results: Open innovation and digital technologies in smart cities, (2) social innovation and citizen participation, (3) sustainability and participatory urban governance, and (4) systemic innovation and transition toward urban sustainability. Moreover, findings indicated that the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy had the highest number of citations in this field, highlighting their influential roles in shaping global research. Among the 25 most active countries, Iran ranked 22nd, with a relatively low level of research output in this area.
Conclusion: Urban innovation and technology have attracted growing attention as an emerging research field worldwide. Analyzing this domain is crucial, as it enables the application of diverse technologies to urban spaces for improving public services and enhancing quality of life.
